Celebrate Black History with Britannica

In February,  we celebrate Black History Month!

Britannica's Guide to Black History presents a vast array of articles, hundreds of images, and a wide assortment of multimedia clips. 

This guide traces two millennia of black history, and the browse features enable you to pinpoint the central people, places, topics, and events covered in Black History.  This Spotlight has biographies on people such as Alvin Ailey, Matthew Henson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Hank Aaron.  In addition, there is a subject browse that allows the user to look up people, places, issues, and events based on topic. Britannica's New World Atlas Features!

New Collections in NBC Learn

NBC Learn has launched three new sections:

With less than a year to go until Election Day, the new collection Decision 2012 has been launched. This new collection is designed to help your students research and analyze the 2012 presidential race based on the candidates, issues, calendar of events and the election process. Students will be able to access candidate profiles, from Mitt Romney to Michelle Bachman, to better understand their positions on the most pressing issues facing the country: the economy and jobs, education, national security, immigration and healthcare. This robust collection of NBC News reports and stories will be updated every weekday through the 2013 presidential inauguration.

You’ll also see two brand new collections on the NBC Learn home page this month: Math & Statistics, and Performing & Visual Arts. The math collection contains nearly 200 videos explaining the numbers behind the news. Math plays a big part in the stories you’ll find here, on everything from the national census to the latest medical studies. For the first time, you’ll find an Activity drawer on our CueCard, with helpful math questions drawing from what content in the videos.

NBC Learn Added

NBC Learn K-12 is an online educational resource that offers unique collections of video resources, primary source documents, historic footage, images, and other materials for use in the classroom. It is currently available to all Delaware public middle schools for the 2010 and 2011 school years through a generous grant by the Honda Foundation. It is also available to all Delaware public high schools for the 2011 school year through a matching donation by NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News.

Enhancements to Gale's In Context Databases

Gale has announced many exciting enhancements coming to the In Context family of resources in the next couple days. These changes are based on user feedback and include universal improvements (i.e. all of the In Context resources) as well as enhancements to individual In Context products.

An example of a universal change is that users will be able to search within portal pages to help them 'trim down' portal page information. An example of an individual product improvement is that people names in Biography in Context have been re-alphabetized by last name to ease the browsing experience. New Updates to Science Online

The latest update to Science Online includes a variety of timely new content and features:

dynamic citations in MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, and APA styles;

more than 100 new, tested experiments;

more than 400 new color illustrations and more than 100 new photographs;

more than 200 new essays;

MLA 7 Available on Select Gale Products

Gale PowerSearch and all InfoTrac products now offer MLA 7 citations.

The Modern Language Association changed their citation format rules in the MLA Handbook, 7th edition, published in March, 2009.

Gale is working toward upgrading all Gale products currently offering MLA 6 citations to MLA 7 citation format.

The most visible changes found in MLA 7 include:

• No more underlining — publication titles and the names of online products accessed are now italicized

• No more URLs — MLA no longer requires URLs, but encourages writers to provide a URL if the citation information does not easily lead readers to the source

• Continuous pagination — this is no longer an issue for scholarly journal citations; both volume and issue numbers are required, regardless of pagination

• Publication medium — since all documents are accessed from an online Gale resource, the citation will always include the medium “Web.” In addition, MLA has eliminated the requirement to include the name of the service (“Gale”) and the name of the subscribing institution

• New abbreviations — when certain metadata is missing, such as publisher or page numbers, there are suggested abbreviations to denote that fact

Britannica Online School Edition includes encyclopedia articles and student Learning Material activities that have been correlated to your state standards and benchmarks. Click the orange "Standards" button within the article or Learning Material to see how the article or activity connects to your state's standards.

To look up specific standards that you are trying to address, click "Teacher Resources" in the Britannica header, and click the orange "Curriculum Standards" link.  Then, simply select your subject area, grade level, and state. The curriculum standards and grade level expectations will appear.  Click on the blue link that reads "materials correlated to this standard" to find supporting Britannica articles and additional online resources and lesson plans.

UDLib/SEARCH Databases from Home

Home access to UDLib/SEARCH databases is now available to all Delaware K-12 public school students, teachers, parents and administrators via a username and password. This username and password may be distributed in school newsletters or printed flyer or verbally to students and their parents.

However, due to licensing agreements, please do not post the username and password on a web site. Be aware that the UDLib/SEARCH web site refers students and their parents to their school librarian to obtain this username and password.

Access within Delaware K-12 public school buildings and Department of Education facilities does not require a username and password.
